Basic Conventional TMJ Treatments


TMJ treatment and analysis for Temporomandibular Disorder is vague and confusing, mainly because of the varied disorder symptoms and causes in various people. 1. Stay away from chewy and crunchy food

2. Massage regularly with ice packs and moist heat
Icing and applying moist heat packs on your face and jaw can help to reduce certain inflammatory sensations on your mouth to a large extent. You can conduct these massages at home for about 5 – 10 minutes or visit a professional physiotherapy center for enhanced results.

3. Perform basic exercises to strengthen the jaw
Your doctor might ask you to perform certain easy and non-straining dental exercises to fortify and relax jaw muscles for about 15 minutes every day. Statistics show that a combination of muscular exercise therapy and massaging over a period of time soothe the jaw remarkably as compared to pills and analgesics.

4. Employ splints to prevent teeth clenching
TMJ at times, causes misalignments in the upper and lower jaw, leading to teeth clenching as one of its after-effects. Hence, wearing splints and night bite plates while you sleep can prevent damage to the teeth. Please note that any orthodontic TMJ treatment device must be used only after proper consultation.

5. Do not yawn and stretch your mouth open a lot
Do not strain your mouth orally and yawn. This causes the muscles around the jaw to tense up and can be irritating to people suffering from TMJ. Also, stress busting activities are very helpful in soothing pain and inflammation around the jaw. Exercise caution so as to not stretch your mouth open too wide.

Basic TMJ treatments cure or help alleviate the symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorder to a great extent. But, if they aren’t wholly successful, you will need to consult specialized TMJ treatment procedures like Ultrasound therapy, Acupuncture and surgery.
